Its time to pack up again, I have spent the last few day ensuring I have everything I need, doing the usual, pack and repack with youngest son Beef, he is using my lightweight pack and I am carrying his one (with a few items of luxury added as well) (why does luxury always weigh more?).
Just before I leave I checked out the forum again, only to find the night before P de Fitter had gone out and used essentially the same kit I had packed and had his face gnawed off my mossies and midge's (well too late now its all a go)
We leave in the afternoon and on the way to the woodland do the usual Hitchhikers radio series (“I shall call it the ground, I wonder if it will be my friend?.. SPLAT!) and arrive at the woods, on with our packs (Beef holds up well to the lightweight pack).
He says he cant remember the way, but gets to the right path, (its all about confidence, and most of us could do with some more).
Every time I go to the woods I cant believe how different it is even just a couple of days creates a profusion of vegetation with so many different shades of greenImage, I almost miss the marker to leave the path, but I must be getting used to distances and the area as I knew when I got close I was able to stop using the compass and follow my nose. When we arrived at the camp, I asked Beef what he would do if I had an accident, he replied that he would use my phone (cant do that no reception), then go back to the path (he would get lost its easy to lose track of where you are), use my compass (and if in his panic he forgot which way to go or lost the compass), (I have to commend him for these ideas) (I then suggested, he knows the stream and exactly the way there, well follow that to the path and follow the path to human life, it may be a little further but was a sure way of getting out).
As I was the last outing before going away on a Bushcraft weekend with some other Bushcrafters I set up both of our camps, attaching new bits to the hammock, adjusting ridge lines to ensure the best hang for a comfortable sleep, while doing this Beef collects our wood and our camp is shaping up to be nice and comfortable, I also set my tarp up so its high on one side so I can see into the woods and attach high visibility guide ropes to it (well worth it, as no one tripped over them or nearly decapitated themselves).
As dusk begins to settle in I get us a brew on, and Beef lays the fire, with a bit of guidance (ensuring he has tinder, kindling and logs all to hand) he gets it going nicely Image(and I must add maintains it most of the night)
Now what next? ah yes FOOD, I have heard a lot about this bread that appears popular amongst bushcrafters called Bannock, and I thought well I should have a go at some of that, so, I make up the mix at home and take it with me (all I have to do now is add water, mix it up and cook it).
Well damn and blast it I add too much water, not loads too much but a bit, so after mixing it I give it 45 mins near the fire to rise (instead of 30 as recommended) and although it is still slightly to moist it appears that I have gone some way to recovering it.
ImageI have it in a £1 shop special camping frying pan and I attempt to cook the beastie, hmm, the bread is sticking to the pan, but again I manage to save this and it begins to form a crust, well I knock the pan into the fire, half the bannock falls into the flames the other half onto the floor (getting covered in twigs, dirt and other detris).
So we just settle for our other food instead (glad I brought extra in case the Bannock was a disaster), we then sit up chatting Imagebefore turning in for the night (no one fell out of their hammock this time).
Beef used my nice DD hammock with inbuilt insect net and I had my £10 lightweight one (with a mossie head net).

Awake around 5am and my silver mat had slipped a bit so I was a bit chilly but with some fine tuning sorted this and dropped back off for a bit, I have said it before, but the pleasure of laying in a hammock listening to life is almost zen like Image(and was improved by having the tarp high so I could see out).
When we got up we were on a bit of a time budget as we had things to do (in the real world), so we planned to have breakfast, pack up and go.
I tried to use my newest hobo stove at this point (I had brought 2 with me, one of them my 2man one and the other my NEW lightweight one (damn and blast again, I keep meaning to take photos of the process when making them and get too carried away)) (If anyone wants to know contact me), the lightweight one did not work very well Imageand took 6 and a half mins to boil one cup of water, so we went over to the other one, and did 2 cups at one time in this time.
While I packed up Beef set about leaving no trace in the camp, he also dug a fire pit, laying small stones in the bottom and then covering it again with soil and arranging sticks around it so we know where it is, and finally scattering leaves over it so its not obvious to a quick glance.Image
On the way back we were chatting and I heard a movement, I put up my hand and Beef stopped talking immediately (theirs a first) and we moved on quietly for a few paces and saw a rabbit, that then scarpered.
Once back at the car we were offloading our packs and I noticed something that made me MAD, so MAD indeed I am still FURIOUS, some BArSTewARD had wedged dog turd into the door handles of my car...

...Upon reflection I still had a great time though...

...Although I did get bitten to blazes by the mossie threat, both elbows and wrist, chest and back, will defiantly be taking the DD Hammock away for the Roving Camp...

...and finally I did some adjustments on my lightweight hobo stove and no have a boil in 3 and half mins (satisfied breath, ah).

I drive over to the car park and meet up with PDF, and get our packs out (this is sounding weird  , it’s gonna sound weirder yet  ) and compare the size of them, mine is too big still (hmm).
After some brief discussion we decide to go to the new camp that I had found on my last trip with my favourite youngest son.
We hike to the stream (well dusty goup infested bed  ) and I find the marking that I had made last time and off due east, quite pleased to find the twatting stick and bushcraft crappa still hidden away in place.
This next bit shows my inexperience (or maybe I am lazy  ) but by the time I had set up my tarp and hammock, PDF had tarp, hammock and collected most of the wood for the night.Image
We then go and have a mooch around looking at PDF’s old camp (and yes, it could be a widow maker), and I then show him where the camp Beef and I had set up (even I still cant get over how close it is to the path, but I think I will retain a soft spot for that place).
When we get back to camp its time to try something new (as is my want  ), so lets try a bow drill, I begin to set things up, cutting wood and making the bow (with the guidance of PDF de (almost) Firestarter  ), who without his help would have taken me a lot longer to get smoke from sticks  , and unfortunately after another hour not much more except knackered arms (will try again though :-) ).
When it finally gets dark, I give up, and we eat, I have some mushroom rice (not good) and PDF does some bacon by the fire (was good).
I then am taught about Bushcraft Slippers and the use of talc for feet :P (I have never had a use for this stuff before and have passes the same tub of it between my brother and I for the last 11 years on birthdays and Xmas).
Then after all things bushcraft have been dealt with we have a beverage and I hope some of you may appreciate if we were playing Top Trumps I would have beaten PDF, (and after last time that can only be a good thing).
As the evening was wearing and the hammock began to call, we retired for the evening, (where trying some of my lightweight stuff ensured I had a cold bum  ).

14-05-11
When we got up in the morning it was about time to time the new hobo stove Image(3 and half mins to boil a cup of water :-D )Image excellent, then we packed up and made our way back, this is getting easier with the lighter weight packs.

14-05-11 Cont...
Back home again, and repack (again), and collect Leeith from school (he has been lookin forward to dis).
We listen to Hitchhikers again (bloody hell how am I going to work my digital watch now?) 8-) (sorry distracted) er, while on our way we are chatting and I explain to Leeith that one of the challenges is not to be seen by anyone and my personal challenge is to start a fire using a bow drill.
As we walk I suggest to Leeith that we look for signs of where to come off the trail, he noticed 3 things that were not normal and the third one was our marker (I have to say I was impressed  ).
I explained to him how to use his compass to find the site and he got very close missing it by yards (again impressed) (this is his first time out).
Setting up was straight forward with Leeith watching me tie a knot just once or twice and then doing it, he had also spent the last 3 days learning various knots from the Collins Gem book and used all the ones I had told him to learn.
We had a coffee  , then went out for a scout and collected some (well I say some)Image lots of wood, and as it was getting late started a fire (damn did not use the bow drill)Image (maybe it was an excuse).
We had a spicy dinner of Couscous and Choziro sausage :-D Mmm, before the evening wore on too far, I then showed Leeith how to look after your feet Bushcraft style (he thinks its as awesome as I do) especially using his Bushcraft slippers.
An hour chatting and then we turned in for the night.

15-05-11
I awoke early hearing noises from around the camp, I call out for Leeith and receive no answer, by the time I manage to look all I see is signs of branches waving like mad as a squirrel must have legged it.
I just lay in the hammock for the next hour listening  to the birds and the life of the woods Image(and Leeith snoring)Image.
We get up and have a drop of coffee before collecting and processing more woodImage, and then pack up camp (I seem to be getting a routine for this, although still not very quick, (evidently more practice needed)).
Another scoutImage, and Leeith finds himself a staff :-) (PDF had noticed it the day before), some brunch of soup and trail mix (fruit only, Leeith is allergic to nuts) (actually nearly everything).
Then we leave for home (pleased to see Leeith forgot about the road as well :-D :-D :-D ).

Oops

Some bits I forgot to add on the trip of 28/30-04-11.

On the first night Beef got into into his hammock and came straight out the other side  , he did this so nonchalantly I had to do a double take before asking him if he fell out, at which point he looked at me sheepishly  and said "Yes" (hehe)

On the second day we went out for our first scout to find out where we were  , as we looped around we crossed the stream and I noticed someone elses camp  , as I pointed this out to Beef, I noticed the PINK fluffy sock that I had hung above our camp hanging above this camp    . (hehehe)

27 to 30-04-11

27-04-11

Time to get last bits for my next adventure, with my favourite youngest son  .

Got up and first thing was to get to the shops and get some deet spray, been to Wales when the mozis have been rife and wished I had some then  , P de Fitter saved the day last time  , well have to deal with that myself now.

Next up Tarp and Hammock, (well you can’t get these things in a shop(at least not locally)), so had better fill up the car and drive for hours, not helped by crappy sat nav :x (orange mobile) being read by not so crappy wifey nav :-D , we eventually arrive at a house and a guy called Mr D (who some of you may know) answers “hellos “ all around and in we go, the first thing I notice is Mrs D tapping away on a laptop then I see he has a bow with (I think it’s called) a quiver of arrows on the wall, (hehe) I was only talking with wifey about getting something like that yesterday.

Anyway back to subject, sort out transaction and Mr D very nicely throws in a few hats for HatMan :zoro: and sons, (who are all well happy with all our kit thanks Mr D), and we leave, in the car wifey turns to me and says “he’s a dish” followed by “did you see the photos of his kids, the all have the same smile and eyes”.

Well Mr D can’t say I noticed your eyes or smile (it that way) but did see the photos of your kids and they look adorable.

When I got home I waited for the son to get in and then we packed our packs, it 3 hours took (hehe). Image Boys and their toys.

28-04-11

As my youngest son (Beef) and I am off today, thought I had best check out E-Weather , it says 20% chance of precipitation  (well Google time) apparently it means weather falling from the sky, and sunset is about 20:30.

Collect Beef from school at 17:00 and listen to Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy  (Radio Series) on the way (always a pleasure), and arrive at the car park at 18:30.

Wack on our packs and away we go, past ant hill bridge and all that, and we try to find the site I went to last time with PDF, after about 45 mins I decide it is unlikely that I will find the place again  (no bag hanging in the air for a start) and we have a scout around for a nice looking spot, and after another 30 mins we find a likely looking place (or at least a place without widow makers and it had trees).

It will be dark in about 45 mins, hmm now I know that I am not uber fast at setting up camp being my 2nd time and I have Beef who is setting up for the first time, so we set to rigging up his camp, with me showing him every knot then undoing it and making him do it again.

Now I really am up against it, 15 mins left till sunset and the woods are getting dark (oops, did not take the woods into account for losing light) , and I have my new DD tarp and hammock, never set those bad boys up before (well they pretty much hang themselves :-D , again thanks Mr D) had them up without needing to get the head torch out  .

While I put up my DD stuff, Beef collected a load of wood and we were able to sit straight down with a fire and literally as the fire goes on so does the head torch (well around the neck), Imagehave a brew and Beef asks for some jokes, I could not believe it he knew more jokes than me (he had been researching with a “1001 jokes book”), then it was time for bed (hammock)

29-04-11

ImageWhen we woke I got our the hobo stove and put on a brew and breakfast coffee and porridge (well breakslow, the stove does not work very well), while doing this we got the map out and had a look at where we thought we were, and after breakfast had a scout around.Image

We confirmed two things we were very close to where I thought we were but did not realise we were only about 25 paces from a path (oops) but still could not be seen from it even in daylight.Image

Back at camp we thought we should get the work out of the way so that we had the afternoon free, so it was time to make a bushcraft toilet (which we both used  ) and collected firewood for the evening and show him how to break it down and made a new twatting stick.

As we were doing this, I had a brew on and a woman walked along by the stream with about 10 dogs who obviously found us (grrr) so when the chores were complete we set out to find another camp for the next visit, and off we go following the natural(ish) contours of the land, the stream (or what is left of it) it’s getting very dry.

I am very pleased to be able to point out exactly where we are on the map a few times, and when we walk a little further and find some fallen trees with cover two sides, Imagethe times get exciting, I walk around and explain to Beef why this could be the spot, back down to the stream we leave a marker so finding it should not be a problem again.

When we got back to the camp again we relaxed for a bit, before breaking down more firewood using new twatting stick (Beef loved doing this 8-) ), and started to clean up a couple of walking staves we had found (unfortunately still not very good with trees, so can’t tell you what wood  ).

Then dinner (couscous and sausage  ) more bad jokes and bed.

30-04-11

We both woke and just lay in the hammocks quietly contemplating the world (what a life this is, eh), sorted out some breakslow (porridge again, but this time with a mix of nuts and dried fruit, Mmm). We then packed up our kit and began to break camp.

We then walked the bits that we had made to the new camp (crapper and twatter), which we found no problem, Image(feel like I am getting the hang of this compass business  ) (looking forward to learning more), went back and collected the rest of our kit and began the trek home.

Beef commented “It’s odd that the packs are lighter but the walk seems longer” :?: .

When we got in we cleaned the knives and axe then unpacked everything else.

Lessons learnt
• My hobo stove has problems, (being from Sean Mulhall’s thermos design) it’s too top heavy with the base being too thin (very unstable), and not enough air holes (think that’s my design flaw).
. Sunset happens when the sun goes below the treeline.
• Need to research how to hang the DD stuff quicker, with the equipment I have (i.e. no carabineers).
• And finally PRACTICE MORE (always a pleasure, never a chore).
